Our Week in Review:

Language Arts: We read 3 more chapters in our novel focusing on character. Next week we will be taking a closer look at the characters in our novel. During writing time students journaled about our novel's main character's mother and the lengths she will go to for her daughter.

Our Daily 5 centers are now underway. We played word games, explored Tumblebooks and wrote in our writing journals. Daily 5 will run in our classroom on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday's. If you want more information about Daily 5 and what it is, refer back to the newsletter I sent home or email me.

Tasty Tuesday - We had our first Tasty Tuesday (but pushed it to the Friday this time) of the year this week. Students turned boring cupcakes into delicious, sweet turkeys and had to write recipe reviews for their creation explaining what they liked, didn't like, etc. about the recipe. Every child that took part has a picture with their turkey. Click the picture to see more.

Spelling - Test results are available on Spelling City. Click the link above to login. New individualized words have also been posted for your child and can be viewed once logged in.

Math: This week we learned to find the missing variables in equations and how we can apply that to patterns. Ask your child to teach you how to play 'Salut' to practice finding missing variable with a deck of cards.

The class learned some new games they can play at home this week to practice their basic facts.
1. Whack a Mole - Students multiply cards and whack them with a fly swatter. (Sounds weird but super fun. Have them show you and you'll understand.)
2. Salute - 3 players. 2 players hold a card on their forehead. They can look at each other's but not at their own. Player 3 tells the the product of the 2 numbers (answer when cards are multiplied). They have to be the first to guess their number.

To wrap up our Patterns unit, we will be having our first math test on Wednesday.

Science: We finished our water cycle foldables and they look great hanging in our classroom. Learning what a meteorologist means when discussing the weather and why they aren't always accurate can be full of tricky concepts. However, the class is getting it and ready to create their own digital weather reports using an avatar. Stay tuned...
