Weekly Update:
Math: This week we wrapped up our unit on shapes by creating our own 2D and 3D shapes out of toothpicks and marshmallows. We sorted shapes into groups by assigning them sorting rules such as shapes with 2 faces, shapes with only 1 vertex etc. This coming week we are going to be building on what we already know and introducing addition and subtraction of numbers as high as 100.
Science: More time was spent on learning about how to properly read a thermometer. We checked temperatures outside on different surfaces to see how they varied depending on the type of surface as well as how the temperature changes from morning to afternoon. The class made a prediction on what takes more space; ice when frozen or when melted. We tested our hypothesis and learned that ice that has melted to a liquid takes up less space than when it is a cube.
Language Arts: Providing positive and productive feedback was the theme in Language Arts this week. Students used Google Classroom to write short blurb about an adventure. It could be fictional or real. They then read each other's after many discussions on what productive feedback looks like. Having to first mention something they enjoyed about the writing, students gave feedback on either punctuation, capitals, interesting words, having a topic sentence and/or starting our sentences in different ways. This week students will read the feedback provided and use it to improve the writing they have done so far.
Spelling: With the Spellathon underway, I won't be sending new words home this week. Instead, I will be adding the Spellathon list on to Spelling City for extra practice. At the end of the week I will randomly choose 15 words from the list to test the class on.
For Tasty Tuesday we made Polar Bear Ice Cream Cups. Thank you to the Carty family for supplying us with all our tasty ingredients. Reading the recipe reviews they wrote, it seems they all loved this simple recipe and would love to make it again at home for you.
