February 22-26 Week

Please click the calendar tab above for all important dates and deadlines. A quick reminder that book orders are due this week. Please have them in by Tuesday if you plan to order.

Before I give my weekly update, I wanted to say a big thank you so much for a wonderful start to the year from Mrs. Ostenal. As you know she has been away since December awaiting shoulder surgery. Since her surgery has again been delayed, she will not be returning this school year. However, she promises to still come and visit every so often as she did this week. I know the kids miss her very much as do I. In the meantime, I am super excited to announce that Mrs. Dewer will now officially be a part of our class for the remainder of the school year. Mrs. Dewer has been with us since December doing a wonderful job and building great bonds with each of your children.

Ok, now onto our weekly update:

Math: Geometry and shapes continued to be our focus this week. We identified attributes of 2D & 3D shapes and created shape monsters in art class. Everyone had a blast playing shape whack a mole with the fly swatters. I have been pulling kids individually through the week for a brief assessment of their number concepts in order to see in any individual extra support is required and will finish up with the last few students at the start of the week.

Language Arts: Each week during Daily 5 times, the class writes one day in their writing journals, one day in some sort of paper form and one day as a typed response to a prompt I post on Google Classroom. This week's prompt was, "These are 5 great things about me". I really enjoyed the responses and wanted to post a couple for you. The requirements when responding were to have a topic sentence and replacing every day words with more interesting ones.

-These are five grand things about me.My first one is hockey because I play hockey. My second one is a lot of writing I em really excellent at it.The third thing is running em very great at it Cole is to. My fourth is math because it exercises your brain.
-The five best things about me are I always let my friends go first. I help people when they can't sound out words. I'm a good helper at home. I help my brother. I am gentle with my sister. One time my brother and I built bird houses he couldn't spray them so I did it for him. Sometimes I help my Mom cook. My favorite thing to cook is Sloppy Joes. I go to bed at 9 pm so I put my little brother to bed before me. I share a room with my little brother so I always help him clean it. When I walk to school I walk with him. I like to play cars and trucks with him.
-There are 5 things that are great about me. 1. I love to read. [ I love to read so much I would read all day!] Last night I read a whole Captain Underpants chapter book! 2. One of my skills is bike riding! I have a purple bike that can go really fast! I love the black tires. 3. I am a very good spy. Once I spied on my sister and that day on she has not found out! I even have my own Spy Master Kit!
-Here are 5 marvelous things about me. I am hilarious and witty. I'm enjoyable and festive .And decent and kool. And tall and fare . And fast gorgeous

During writers workshop this week we launched a new project creating a parody of, "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs". The class started off by naming their town and describing it's location in order to identify the setting of our story.

Science: Continuing to learn about thermometers and temperature, the class identified the different parts of thermometer, how they work and how to properly read them. Then we set up thermometers in different areas of the school to predict and check how the temperatures in different parts of the school varied. We discussed why they did vary (near a door, closed space, windows, large areas, etc.) and used that information to make our predictions for the next location.
