January 11-15th Update

Thank you so much to all the parents who came out to help with skating week! It was a smooth success. I think I like the new system for signing up (Bloomz). It seemed to work very well on my end. Please let me know if you have any feedback.

Don't forget that even though we are filling in agendas at the start of the week now, I still need you to check each day for any new notes or announcements. I will continue to do the agenda draw at the end of each week.

Our week at a glance:

Math: This week we focused on counting money. We counted by nickels, dimes, quarters and pennies. As well we introduced ordinal numbers. Today we are finishing off our week with math centers focusing on money and ordinal numbers.

Social Studies: Our study of culture in our 3 Canadian communities is well underway. This week we looked closer at the community of Iqaluit and what life is like there on a daily basis and how that helps shape it's culture and sense of community. Be sure to ask your child to describe the Nunavut flag and what the different parts of it represents.

Language Arts: Polar bears are the hot topic in our classroom for the next little while. For the next few weeks we are learning more about non-fiction literature and how to write non-fiction pieces as we learn about polar bears in the Arctic. This topic also ties in with our social studies as the polar bear is a big part of the Inuit culture. It also ties into an upcoming science topic about hot and cold temperatures and how animals adapt for climate.

During Writer's Workshop time the class worked on making their words more interesting by including more descriptive words into sentences. We also worked on maintaining a focus in our writing and not swaying from small moment we started with.

Please send in a toilet paper roll (empty) if you haven't done so already. We will need it very soon for an upcoming social studies and art activity.
