Language Arts: Great arguments were made on Friday by Tom the Turkey (AKA, our class) convincing people to cook hot dogs for Thanksgiving this year instead of turkey. Together we brainstormed arguments and then the kids wrote their own persuasive piece which we then placed in our Tom Turkey. Click the picture caption at the bottom of this post for pictures.
Kidblog was introduced to our class this week. Students log on and respond to a picture prompt that I post. Once everyone is used to the process, they will be learning about positive, constructive feedback and given the opportunity to read each others posts and provide feedback to each other.
Launching our word sorts this week went very well. At the start of each week I will be meeting with small groups of students to introduce their sort to them. Students have been practicing their sorts each morning during after they sign themselves in. Please continue to practice the sorts at home and to keep the envelopes in their kanga pouches so that I can change the words as needed. Words given in the sorts are also their weekly spelling words and will be tested at the end of each week.
Please return home reading books every Thursday.
Math: Our basic facts strategy focus this week was +2 & -2. We will continue with the same focus next week but also practicing our +- 0 & 1. The concept covered this week in math was missing addends. For example 3 + ____=8. We did this using a number line and relating subtraction to the addition question. Students were then encouraged to choose which strategy worked best for them or try other strategies that they were more comfortable with.
Social Studies: After being introduced to our 4 communities of focus, we learned about the weather, landscape and bodies of water in each one.
