New Theme & Special Guest

It will be a busy week in 4A as we wrap up a social unit on Monday with our unit test and prepare to begin our new science unit on Thursday. Plus on Tuesday afternoon, we will have a special visit from Jane Felling in the afternoon. Mrs. Felling, the creator and provider of many of the games and supplies that come home in our math packs is going to be teaching the class some new math games to try.

Social Studies: As I mentioned, we will be wrapping up our first unit of Social Studies, Alberta: A Sense of the Land. The unit test is on Monday and all students brought home the unit outline and study notes they made to help them prepare.

Math: This past week we began studying multiplying larger numbers. The focus was multiplying numbers by 10 & 100 followed by easy ways to multiply numbers with 0 endings in the factors. For example, 3X800=2400. Next week we are going to move onto multiplying 2 & 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers.

Science: On Thursday we will begin a new Science unit where we explore wheels, levers and other simple machines. This unit is very hands on and one of my favorites. Students will each need a regular size (not boot or toddler) shoe box. As well, if anyone has empty spool threads that they are about to throw out, please send them with your child as we can use them in this unit.

Language Arts: We began exploring folk tales by reading and discussing porquoi tales about respecting the earth and how the four seasons came to be. I am excited to see how the recent art project we started last week will turn out as it is directly tied to one of the stories we studied about the four seasons.

Daily 5: I am adding a new session into our Daily 5 time to allow me extra special time working in small groups with students for some extra support and/or enrichment. Our extra session has some groups involved with readers theatre and other in book clubs. The text chosen for each group is specially chosen for their interest and reading levels.
