Class Dojo - Class Dojo has been a real hit again this year. I have been loving the communication between myself, parents and students that has happened as a result. The only questions I have had really were about what should be expected per week for points. Typically I like to focus on the positive and give points rather than take away. For instance, I will look in the morning and see who is ready for calendar with their Rise and Shine binders out and give each of those people a point rather than take points away. When I take a point it usually means it was something more serious or there was a warning in between. Expect your child to be earning 18-20 points a week. (Except this week because I was away for some of the time and it was a short week).
Math - Relating addition to subtraction continued to be our focus this week in Math. After lots of practice with whiteboards, counters and as a class, students made ladybugs of an assigned number, dividing the number on its wings and had to create 2 addition and 2 subtraction sentences to correspond. Our basic facts focus was +1/-1 this week.
Language Arts - This week we created our Daily 5 anchor chart on writing. We learned that we practice our writing to become better writers and readers! When we write, we write quietly and the whole time. We sound out words we don't know how to spell and we always start right away. It has been a lot of fun reading what your child has to say in their writing journals.
I have started preparing our spelling groupings based on an assessment I gave last week. Students are being put into 4 separate spelling groups based on what their spelling needs are. You will receive a letter with more information and how to help your child practice their words each night.
Home reading has begun and students were sent home with new books for the weekend. Our home reading book exchange will be Thursday. I apologize for any confusion I caused by changing the day but I had a parent offer to volunteer to help me with this weekly on Thursdays and want to take advantage of that extra help. If your child didn't switch books on Thursday, I will do it with them on Monday. Our first library day will be on Tuesday.
Zones of Regulation - We began learning about our Zones of Regulation this week and what each colour means. This week we will be exploring the green zone and what it looks like, feels like and what other people think of us when we are in the green zone. When we are green we are happy, relaxed, calm and ready to learn.
Social Studies - We are wrapping up our mapping skills study by creating our own town maps by reading and following directions, using a compass rose and creating symbols to represent our imaginary town.
