Congratulations to Matthew for being our Student of the Week at this week's assembly! Thank you Matthew for adding a sense of urgency to your work and working hard to get started right away on tasks!
This morning at assembly we presented our Operation Christmas Child boxes to Gil Dimas. Together our class donated over 7 boxes! That's amazing, thank you for your donations and support.
Each child who donated had their name put into a draw to have their boxes delivered to a child in need on video and Ryce from our room was drawn! His box will be hand delivered and he was able to record a message to show that child in Nicaragua!
Our daily 5 routine has gotten very strong and I see lots of young writers in this room! The students are taking responsibility for their learning, getting started right away and exploring Read to Self, Work on Writing and Word Work at their own choice!
We have been reading a lot of stories about this crazy old lady who swallows some crazy things! This has been a focus on making inferences while reading and support your guess with evidence. We would read the title of the book, "There was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Rose" and try to think of other things she might swallow. Then as we read, inferring from what she was swallowing, we would try to guess what she was building in the end! With each guess we had to find clues or evidence in our reading to support what we thought.
Today we planned our own Old Lady story! Every student started with an old lady who swallowed a pea and the things they came up with are absolutely hilarious! We will be making these stories into virtual slideshows with Darren Maltais next week in google classroom.
In math this week we focused on all the different ways to make 10. This is an important skill to know in order to use mental math skills to solve problems. We discussed how there are number pairs that always go together to make 10. Next week we will discuss fact families and how they help us check our addition and subtraction answers.
Canada is a large and vast country and we have been learning about its 10 provinces and 3 territories. Today we went through our sheets from home (thanks for filling them out!) to see where our families and heritage show up on the map.
