November 11-15

It is looking like this will likely be my last week with the class. We are interviewing for my position on Wednesday and chances are your new teacher will begin on Monday unless I get another wind. If this is the case, I am going to be sad to be leaving this class as they are just such a sweet group of kids. There are a lot of big hearts in our classroom and my replacement is going to be very lucky to have them. I will keep in touch with the class as much as I can and visit every so often (I will miss them too much if I don't.)

Here is what we are up to this week:

Math - We have been working on equal and unequal equations. For instance, 2+5 = 3+4. We also covered how addition and subtraction problems can be written multiple ways and are related to each other. This week we are going to discuss what is missing in equations, especially when it comes to story problems. E.g. Jack ate 2 apples on Monday and had eaten 6 in all. How many apples did Jack eat the rest of the week? 2+____=6.

Social Studies - Mapping has been our focus in Social Studies this past week. We have been learning about the compass rose, how to read a map, map symbols, etc. On Wednesday we are going to start a little mapping project where we create a map of our own communities that includes all these things. It will be either of the community we live in or one we design for ourselves.

Language Arts - Since it is a short week, I have already given the class the new spelling words. I am going to be bumping up the intensity of the spelling words starting next week. It will be important that your child practices them throughout the week.

Voice Threads - Thanks to all the parents who made it out to student led conferences on Wednesday night. I am sure you all enjoyed hearing your child's digital stories using voice threads. Should you want your own copy of the actual project, you can go to https://voicethread.com/ and enter your child's user name and password (same as the one they use to log on to their emails and Chromebooks) which I can send home in their agendas. From there you can export them to your own computer and keep a permanent copy for I believe $2-3.
