Our week at a glance...

Language Arts -

Writing: We have been exploring the differences between narrative, expository and opinion genres of writing and will begin journal writing this coming week.

Novel Study: The class is reading a fun book about a boy and his family is moved out to Alcatraz Island because his father has taken as job there as a guard and electrician. The book takes place during the 30's and tells of the adventures this boy and his young friends have living outside the most famous prison of all time.

Spelling: Students have been given individualized spelling lists that meet their specific needs. Words are given at the start of each week and tested at the end. Encourage your child to practice their words regularly. A note went home today with your child's first week's spelling test scores and instructions on how to monitor scores weekly as well as which words were missed. Click the spelling tab above for more information about our spelling program.

Math: Beginning with multiplication, we have begun practicing our basic facts with daily activities, games and reviewing commutative properties. (e.g. 3x4 is the same is 4x3) Patterns is our primary focus for the next few weeks and learning how to find pattern rules.

Science: The topic of weather was introduced. We began exploring what weather is, how we check weather reports, air circulation (hot air rises, cool air sinks and why) and reading a thermometer. Today we made spirals and tested them over heated air to see for ourselves the effects of warm air and how it moves.

Mr. Maltais (our district technology coach) came out to help me get the class started on creating their own Piktocharts that we will update throughout our weather theme.

P.E. - Mr. Maron has asked that each student keeps a personal deodorant in their lockers for the start of each P.E. class.

Art - We discussed some of our favourite books and everyone designed a bookmark that represented the books.
