Lest We Forget

This week as a class we focused on thinking about those who have given us the right to learn and helped us live the lives we do.

As a class we listened and read the poem, "In Flanders Fields" and connected to the text by personal responses. In groups we answered questions about how reading the poem made us feel, who it may remind us of, and what words in the poem really stuck with us.

Using mixed media we created some beautiful poppies and sent them home on Friday. What amazing work!

During our Remembrance Day Ceremony I was so impressed with our students. Every student showed excellent respect for our guests in colour and spent their moment of silence in deep thought of thanks. Thank you to all the veterans and decorated guests who came to our ceremony.
4S did a wonderful reading of "In Flanders Fields" and our student choir sang beautifully. Our entire student body showed their respect through song by singing "For the Good of Many".

In daily 5 this week we launched Word Work. This is a time for students to work with their weekly spelling words in various activities, such as, building words with letter tiles, rainbow writing, finding rhyming words for spelling words, and stamp spelling. With daily 5 I have seen so much students build responsibility for their own learning. With every session they are getting their materials, showing a sense of urgency and getting started right away. There are even some advantageous students creating their own chapter books!

In math we have been discussing the language used in addition and subtraction problems through reading and solving word problems. We discussed the parts of addition and subtraction sentences and what the meaning of equal and unequal is. On Friday we had the chance to explore our newly learned skill in some interactive math centers!
