Holy Snow!

I hope everyone had a safe weekend! This snow storm was crazy!
This past week we have been busy in the classroom as well! The students have been practicing our Christmas Concert tunes and moves and I can't wait for you to come see them December 2nd! They are singing about Christmas somewhere HOT and can dress in "Beach Wear" for dress rehearsals on December 2nd as well as the show.

We were super lucky this week to have a technology ninja in our classroom. Mr. M showed the students and myself some cool things we can do with our chromebooks! He also helped us kickstart our "Old Lady" stories on google slides. Every showed creativity in the numerous items their old ladies swallowed! To prepare for this project we read a few different versions in the Old Lady Who Swallowed... series and compared the different items and why it made sense that she would swallow them.

When reading in Daily 5 time we have been discussing the CAFE strategies of making inferences and retelling a story. With this series we made inferences as to what to Old Lady was going to "burp" up base on the evidence we read (items she was swallowing). After read to self sessions students have been sharing stories they have read with the retelling rope! This is when we focus on how to retell a story from the most important parts - Title, Character, Setting, Problem & Solution. With work on writing students have found interest in retelling familiar stories and sharing their writing with the class. There is so much talent in this room!

In Math we discussed fact families and how they help us solve addition problems. We explored fact families with manipulatives and had a little fun race with our whiteboards! Students are encouraged to practice their basic math facts at home through www.sumdog.com or IXL. Both links can be found on this blog on the right hand side under the "Math" heading.

Social we have been discussing Canada and its communities. In Grade Two we study the three communities in Canada: Iqaluit(Nunavut), Saskatoon(Saskatchewan) and Meteghan(Nova Scotia). To explore Canada we traced our history and where our families are from and marked them on our Canada map, discussed the 10 provinces and 3 territories and their capital cities. We marked our three communities on a map of Canada and discussed their landscapes.
