February 24-28

A few special events happening this week...
1) Skating
2) The Happiness Project on Tuesday afternoon, 1:50pm-2:50pm
3) School Assembly Wednesday morning 8:40am, Wear pink to support Anti-bullying initiatives

In the Class...

ELA: Story writing, Guided Reading, Poetry, Spelling... This week's words focus on hard and soft 'c'.

Math: We are subtracting numbers 1-100.

Strategies we use to help us subtract are:

1) Ten-frames (a great visual, especially when working with 10s)
2) Manipulatives like snap cubes or base-10 blocks
3) Hundreds chart (use like a number line, but go up or down for 10s and over for ones)
4) Mental math (subtracting tens, subtracting ones)
5) Basic Facts (the ability to recall basic facts quickly helps us when subtracting larger numbers)

Social: We are studying 3 of Canada's communities. So far we have learned to write in Inuktituk (Inuit language), created an Inukshuk landscape painting, and read about Inuit way of life. This week we learn more about the Inuit people through interactive websites (see the links at the side), and begin learning about the Acadians.

Thank you for helping your child gather information on their family's heritage. Students will be using this information to write about their family's culture and history for our class Family Heritage Book.
