December 2-6

It's December! A busy and exciting month for all! Christmas concert, Suessical fieldtrip, PJ and Cookie day, and more!

This week is Christmas concert week. The Grade 2's will be performing on Wednesday, December 4th. Doors open at 6:45pm. The Concert is at 7pm and will last about 45mins. The Gr.2's are one of the first to perform!

ELA: This month, along with the Daily 5, we will be doing some special writing projects. One will be a letter to Santa, and the other, a holiday story. Spelling words this week focus on the Long U sound.

Math: We are working on Mental Math strategies in math. Strategies used so far:
  • adding 1 more/2 more
  • subtracting 1 less/2 less
  • 'making 10' to help us solve equations, eg) 9+8 is the same as 10+7 so the answer is 17. We used counters and 10-frames to help us with this. We played a game called 'Fast Eyes'.
Monday we will look at Doubles. (1+1, 2+2, 3+3, 4+4, 5+5, 6+6, 7+7, 8+8, 9+9) The goal is to know these facts without using counters.

We will also study how we can use the strategy of 'near-doubles' to solve other equations in our heads.

eg) 6+7=? If we know 6+6=12, we can add one more to get the answer of 13.

This is the last week for our 'Adding/Subtracting to 18' unit. We will be doing an assessment project for most of the week.

Social: Friday was a fun day for us because we put our Flat Stanley in an envelope, addressed it, and got them all ready to mail. Just like in the book! We are so excited for our Flat Stanleys to arrive at their destinations! This week we will map the places our Flat Stanleys/Stellas will visit, as well as look at 3 special communities in Canada that we will be studying this year: Saskatoon, Meteghan, and Iqaluit.

Health: Monday is our first 'Pleased to Be Me" session.
