A New Face in the Room
Book Clubs
We launched our first book club of the year today during language arts. Students were all placed in groups of 3 and each group was assigned a different book to read and complete various hands on tasks as they get through it. Books were all chosen to match the interest levels of each group. After reading the first chapter today, everybody was excited about their book choices and can't wait to read more on Monday. Book clubs will typically run on Monday & Friday of each week until we complete our books. Groups will then be given a project to present during a book talk with the class.
Wheels & Levers
There were no bumps or bruises today as the class human log rolled themselves to the gym stairs after a discussion of how rollers make work easier by reducing the amount of friction produced when moving a heavy object. I have to admit, I just love this science unit. Each day is full of labs and hands on activities. To help your child better understand how simple machines, such as rollers work, point them out and discuss them when you see them. For example, the next time you are at the grocery store, show them how the milk coolers use rollers to always bring a new carton of milk forward when one is removed. Or show them how the grocery cart uses 4 wheels and axles to make pushing the cart easier.
Blog question...who was in the bin that Jordan had to push across the room today during a roller demonstration?
Drumheller Parent Volunteers
Names were drawn today for parent volunteers for our Drumheller trip. We ended up being able to draw 3 names rather than just 2. Should something come up or we end up with another space, I kept the ballots and another draw will take place at that time.
