Social Studies - This week we continued to learn about Alberta's wealth of natural resources with a focus on non-renewable resources. They learned first hand about how quickly these resources can run out and how each time we look for them, they can become harder to find. Ask your child what they learned from our 200 penny/coal hunt. In fact, let's make this a blog question to add into your child's agenda!
Math - We are still working on basic division skills this week and will continue until the end of next week. I would expect a unit test the following week depending on how we do and if extra attention is needed for any concepts. Stay tuned. From there we will start learning about multiplying and dividing larger numbers.
We have also been working on time concepts. Currently we are looking at reading time on an analogue clock and figuring out what time it will be in 3 hours or 15 minutes ago, etc. Once everyone has this down pat, we are going to start looking at 24 hour time.
Language Arts - 'The Orphan Boy" is a magical folk tale about a star that goes missing from it's constellation and is being searched for by an old man who comes across a lost orphan boy instead. He later discovers that this lost child is actually the missing star with a special lesson about patience and respecting wishes for the man. To expand on this story, I brought in my daughters Twilight Turtle and we found all sorts of constellations in our darkened classroom. Students then researched some different constellations and recreated them with marshmallows and toothpicks which are on display in our hallway with the information cards they wrote up. If you get a chance to take a look, please do so. They turned out great and the kids are really excited about them.
We also spent some time talking about personal responsibilities at home and school and read some native folk tales about the importance of fulfilling our responsibilities.
Next week we are going to be reading about some folk tale heroes. (Even Paul Bunyan).
