Toys, Herdmans & Numbers

Wow, what a week it has been!

Math: The grade 4's have been learning to represent numbers to 9999 by looking at place value, standard and expanded form and using words. This week was a bit more challenging for not only the kids but also the adults in the room as we looked at different strategies for performing mental math (to quote a student, "adding really big numbers in my head and hoping it doesn't blow up while I do it."). Don't fret if your child didn't quite get it yet, this is something that will take practice and time and there will be plenty of both as the year progresses. We have actually started building into our daily math warm-ups.

Next week we are going to look at how to add big numbers and the different strategies we can use to do so.

Language Arts: We are getting ready to wrap up our novel study of "The Best School Year Ever". This book has lead to a lot of great laughs and discussions. Next time you are in the school take a look at the really cool life size cut outs created of the main characters in the book. Students wrote on them any information we learned about that person and continued to update them with new information as the story progressed.

Spelling: There will be a spelling test next Friday on the October word wall words. New words will be introduced the following week but if you want a sneak peak, you can view them on Spelling City.

Science: It is amazing just how much cool stuff can be created from the things we regard as waste. Today the class set up an open house and other classes were invited to come and learn about what was made, how they made them and what they do. Everyone had a lot of fun playing with the new toys. Don't worry, I'll post pictures! We are going to start wrapping up our Waste unit and moving onto a study of Alberta and it's geography very soon. Stay tuned for a date for the unit exam.
