New Month = Great New Stuff!

Theme - Social Studies

November is going to be yet another busy month as we have wrapped up our Waste and Our World theme and are moving onto the Alberta: A Sense of the Land (social studies) theme. To start of the new unit, we visited Leduc #1 on Friday and learned all about Alberta's oil history and how one great discovery help lead to the rapid growth and prosperity of our province.

In this new unit or "theme", we are exploring Alberta's geography and resources. Students will be learning about the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources and the abundance of natural resources our province has to offer. This also includes a study of the different energy sources used in Alberta and what we can do to preserve what we have.

Working with Words (spelling)

We are introducing new word wall words on Wednesday. The spelling test for these words will be on Monday, November 14th. The words have been posted on spelling city for extra practice and fun.

Language Arts

We are going to be wrapping up our novel study of "The Best School Year Ever" this week and will explore various forms of writing that include folk tales and poetry.

Math

As you would have read in your child's agenda, there will be a math test on Friday. This test will cover the concepts of place value to 9999, adding and subtracting numbers to 9999 (with borrowing, trading and carrying) and writing story problems (e.g. given a problem such as 546 + X = 643 then having to use the equation to create a story problem.)

Our next unit will be multiplying and dividing numbers. To help your child prepare for this unit, talk about the concept of multiplying and dividing in everyday situations and have them practice remembering their multiplication tables.

See you all at student led conferences on Wednesday night!
